Power Inverters

Power inverters are devices that can convert DC to AC to allow for the safe operation of devices such as kitchen appliances, electric lights, and power tools. They are also able to control the torque and speed for electric motors.

Being able to convert from DC to a more conventional source of power through AC means that power inverters allow you to operate a range of devices, from electric lights, microwaves, power tools, computers, and kitchen appliances, to name a few. It does this by drawing power from a battery (typically 12 volt) which will need to be recharged after use. There are several ways to recharge them such as running a car engine, a gas generator, solar panels, or even by plugging it into an AC outlet.

Benefits of Power Inverters

There are several benefits to using power inverters. First, they can be an efficient way in which to change the voltage from the power source to the device. Second, they allow you to move the voltage up and down depending on your needs. Third, it aids to safety by creating a step of electrical isolation between the input component and the output. Forth, adding to the safety element it can smooth out any variations in the voltage input that may arise. In doing so, you achieve a constant and steady supply of power. Finally, it can assist in converting 50 Hz to 60 Hz, or the other way around, to ensure the smooth running of the devices and prolonging the life of the battery.

Key Features

As well as being able to convert energy from one form to another, power inverters have a few other key features. First, some are equipped with USB ports. That means as well as being able to carry out work on your car or DIY projects, you will be able to charge other devices. This is particularly useful to those travelling for work purposes.

Second, some inverters are designed to include a digital screen, giving the user important information, such as how much energy has been consumed and the battery voltage. Finally, some inverters, especially those that are solar powered, have been engineered to function quietly, meaning that if running at night it won’t wake you up.

Types of Power Inverters

There are typically two varieties of power inverters. The first is the True Sine Wave inverter. These are designed to replicate, and sometimes improve, the power provided. Although the more expensive option, their ability to convert power makes them an ideal inverter for those using gadgets that consume high levels of energy, such as computers, heaters, and air-conditioners.

The second variety is the Modified Sine Wave inverter which, although a lot cheaper, is used more smaller items and less of them. They are ideal for running things such as lights, kitchen appliances and small power tools.

As well as types, there are different sizes of power inverters depending on what types of devices you plan to run off it and how many of them there will be.
